FAQs about Invisalign®

What are the primary "dos and don'ts" of Invisalign treatment?

For professional results, the most critical “do” is wearing your aligners for 20–22 hours every day. You should also always store your trays in their protective case to avoid loss or damage. Key “don’ts” include never eating or drinking anything other than water while wearing the aligners, as this can warp the plastic or cause deep staining. Additionally, avoid using hot water to clean them, as heat can permanently alter their shape.

No, you must always remove your clear aligners before eating or snacking. The plastic is not designed to withstand the pressure of chewing and can easily crack or warp. Furthermore, eating with them in allows food particles and sugar to become trapped against your teeth, significantly increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease during your treatment.

Most patients adjust to speaking with aligners within a few days. You may notice a slight lisp initially as your tongue adapts to the new space in your mouth, but this is temporary. To speed up the process, we recommend practicing reading aloud or having more conversations during the first 48 hours to help your mouth muscles adjust more quickly.

While you have the flexibility to remove them, it is vital to stay within the 2-to-4-hour daily limit for being “tray-free”. Leaving them out for 3 hours occasionally—for a special event or meal—is acceptable, but doing so frequently can slow your progress. If left out too long, your teeth may begin to shift back, making the aligners feel tight or uncomfortable when reinserted.

The first week is the most significant adjustment period. You may feel some mild pressure or soreness as your teeth begin to move. To manage this, stick to soft foods for the first few days and use over-the-counter pain relief if needed. Using “chewies” (small silicone tubes) can help seat your aligners properly, and staying hydrated will help with any initial dry mouth.
