The Initial Assessment
When the patient first visited our clinic, our assessment identified a complex set of dental needs:
- Orthodontic Concerns: Anterior crossbite (tooth 12), posterior crossbite (tooth 15), retroclined lower incisors, and significant crowding.
- Dental Health: A high risk for decay and areas of existing caries that required urgent attention.
Our Expert Approach: "Health First"
Before beginning the physical movement of teeth, our clinical team, led by Orthodontist Claire O’Sullivan, collaborated with the patient and their general dental practitioner. We insisted on a “Health First” approach:
Restorative Prioritisation: We coordinated with the patient’s dental practice to complete all necessary fillings and cleanings before the braces were fitted. This ensured that the teeth were strong and healthy enough to support orthodontic movement.
Oral Hygiene Education: Recognising the importance of hygiene during treatment, our team provided consistent guidance on interdental cleaning, plaque control, and dietary habits to prevent further decay while wearing fixed appliances.
The Treatment Journey
The orthodontic phase involved a precise, multi-stage approach to correct the alignment and bite:
- Fixed Appliances: We utilized high-quality American Orthodontics brackets to manage the complex movement required.
- Space Management: Our team performed Interproximal Reduction (IPR) and used coil springs to create the necessary space to correct the crossbites.
- Bite Correction: Utilising Class II elastic wear, we successfully corrected the molar relationships, transitioning from a crossbite to a stable, functional occlusion.
- Continuous Monitoring: Throughout the treatment, the team, including Ortho Laura Herbsta and our orthodontic therapists, closely monitored the patient, performing adjustments and addressing appliance maintenance promptly to keep the treatment timeline on track.
The Result
The patient completed their active orthodontic treatment in early 2024. Following the removal of the braces, custom Essix retainers were fitted to maintain the corrected alignment.
The patient’s journey highlights a successful “Dental-Ortho Partnership.” By managing oral health alongside tooth alignment, we ensured the patient left with not only a straighter, more confident smile but a healthier dental baseline for the future. We continue to see this patient for routine checks, ensuring their long-term success.
